THIS WAS 909 ADE 2016
Welcome to the amazing world of the TR-909. Maybe to you it just looks like a lot of buttons, but we promise it will take only five minutes until you master the Japanese logic. Time to get started!
For starters; every techno track consists of a four-note chord consisting 16 counts. You can see this in the middle of the application going from left to right. On these counts you can add different music components. You can find these components in the INSTRUMENT SELECT section. For instance KICK, SNARE, HAND CLAP and TOM. When you click on the light next to the instrument, you can start adding this component.
Let’s start with the KICK, the foundation for your track and the element that will put to work your subwoofers. For a rolling techno sound you can put the beat on 1, 5, 9 and 13. The sky is the limit. For a crazy breakbeat rhythm you can make all sorts of combinations. Press START in the upper left corner to listen to your creations. Select your wanted TEMPO (with techno this usually is between 118 and 140). You get the picture, time to terrorize your neighborhood!
With your foundation set you can start adding new components. Learning as you play, you will find out what sounds dope and what doesn’t. Don’t start with a 16 counts full of a SNARE. When you’ve giving all (or some) sounds a place, you’re on your way!
But not so fast, DJ! On the top you find INSTRUMENT VOLUME DECK with even more buttons and sequencers which control every component from the INSTRUMENT SECTION. These help to create a little variation in your rhythm. Adjusting your TOM a bit, can make huge difference.
Time to party, but pay attention for just one more minute. Now the real fun starts. In the upper right corner you see Pattern control with four buttons. You started at 1, now press 2. Everything turns quite… NOOOO.
Don’t panic, this is a new field where you program new beats. Let’s continue with the beats from channel 1. Go to channel 1 and the beats blasts from your speakers again. Press the COPY button and go the channel 2 and press PASTE. You’ll hear the track you just programmed. You can now apply changes without losing your track in channel 1. When you filled all four tracks, press LOOP and you´ll hear channel 1 till 4 in a 64 counting chord. But the best thing is to start playing with your rhythm and combining this with the INSTRUMENT VOLUME.
Last but not least: finished your track and think it’s dope? Press the save button to the left bottom. A link to Facebook will appear. Of course, we advise to share your rhythm with your friends to impress them with your skills. You will get a separate link which you can use to save your work and proceed on another day. Just copy and paste the link and you will rule the 909 once again!
Every week we are giving away 3x2 guest list spots for 909. You can easily participate on the 909-facebook app. Click here to go to the app right away.
